Getting Your Child Started In Scouting

When you think about Scouting it may bring to mind great experiences for kids that build friendships and character. You may think of the Scouting movement as a way to instill timeless values in today's youth. Maybe you are looking into Scouting because your child came home from school excited about a friend who invited them to visit their unit. Whatever the reason, you want your child in scouting here are some steps to get you there. You will need to find some units to visit. This may be a pack at your sons school, a troop at your families place of worship, or a crew sponsored by a community organization. Todays scouting offers opportunities for boys starting from first grade as Tiger Cubs, and both boys and girls from 13 (and has completed the 8th grade)-20 in Venturing or with a Sea Ship.

  • You and your child may want to visit several different units to find a good fit or your son may be joining a unit to be with friends.
  • Once you have selected a unit you will need to fill out paperwork. A B.S.A. youth application for your child, and a B.S.A. adult application for each adult who will be participating with them. With each adult application you must submit a completed and current (Online Course) Youth Protection Training Certificate for the specific level of Scouting your child will be entering. While you are there you could also view the online introduction "This is Scouting."
  • Before participating in activities outside of meetings you will need to submit health forms for your child and yourself. A visit to the doctor is only necessary for trips over three days such as summer camp.
  • Your new unit may also have adults fill out Talent Surveys or Scouter Resumes to help find ways you can help support your child's new scouting program. If you have joined a Troop or Varsity Team you should also fill out a merit badge councilor packet.

We hope this gets you and your child off to a great start in Scouting!

Venturing

WHAT IS VENTURING?

Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age.

Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

Venturing is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities. Local community organizations establish a Venturing crew by matching their people and program resources to the interests of young people in the community. The result is a program of exciting and meaningful activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, grow, develop leadership skills, and become good citizens.

Cub Scouts

THE CUB SCOUTING PROGRAM

In 1930, the Boy Scouts of America created a new opportunity called Cub Scouting for boys younger than Boy Scout age. A year-round, home-centered program anchored by chartered organizations, Cub Scouting emphasizes involvement between boys and their parents, adult leaders, and friends.
In the multidimensional plan of the Boy Scouts of America, Cub Scouting is where it all begins. Currently, it is the largest of the organization's four membership divisions. (The others are Boy Scouting, Exploring, and Learning for Life.)

About Scouting

Welcome scouts, future scouts and parents!

W. D. Boyce, while visiting London encountered a Boy Scout who impressed him with his character. He investigated the organization formed by Robert Baden-Powell and brought this idea back to the United States and with Edward S. Stewart and Stanley D. Willis formed the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910. Now Scouting in the U. S. is in it's second century and has expanded to include young Tiger Cubs and through Venturing girls and boys from 14 to 20.
